Safety = Freedom

Tips on reporting Hate Crimes: Write down a detailed description of the assailant and incident, save the name and badge number of any responding officers, explain to the officer why you believe the incident was bias-motivated, get a copy of the report, follow-up when you’re able.

It’s not your fault. Nobody has the right to violate your boundaries or commit violence against you, no matter where it happens or how you met.

Trust your instincts. If it feels unsafe, it is unsafe. Exit the situation if at all possible.

Be aware of surroundings. Look for local public spaces and 24-hr businesses to seek help from if you feel unsafe.

Buddy System. Especially at night. Ask someone to walk to your car. Let someone know where you are going. Share your phone’s location with someone you trust.

You can say no. No matter who initiates or how far you’ve gone, you can stop at any time for any reason.  “No” is a complete sentence. You can always rescind consent.

Know your limits. If you’re going to use substances, including alcohol, know where they are coming from and who made your drink. Never leave your substances/drinks unattended. Decide ahead of time when and how much you will use.

If confronted, Call 911. Use words to alert bystanders and use your body to defend yourself or to get away. Save hotline numbers in your phone to use when you are in a safe space.

Document the incident. Record conversation on your phone discreetly. Take photos of any injuries. Keep records of emails, texts, calls.

Take care of yourself. Utilize the help of supportive friends, partners, and family. You’re not alone. Community events and activities help heal and fortify resilience. Drink water, sleep, and eat.

Get involved. To help keep our communities safe, volunteer with us and other community serving orgs. Help develop our programs and projects to bring safety and education for all communities.
